history

As early as 1945 Masao Horiba built a private radio laboratory in Kyoto for research purposes, in which he initially worked on the development of a capacitor for high-performance computing machines. However, in the early 1950s, the cost explosion of materials as a result of the Korean War stood in the way of commercial production of the capacitor . Instead, he successfully sold the pH analyzer that was actually intended to control the capacitor .

On January 26, 1953, Masao Horiba founded the Horiba Seisakusho. The newly established company initially devoted itself to the further development of the pH analyzer. In 1959 Horiba entered into an alliance with Hitachi , Ltd. a. Under the Hitachi-Horiba brand name, the company developed and manufactured all of the analytical instruments sold by Hitachi. The partnership lasted about 40 years.

At the request of the Japanese government, Horiba developed the first MEXA-1 automotive exhaust gas analyzer in 1964. In 1971, the Horiba was listed for the first time on the Osaka Stock Exchange in the second section. In 1974 a listing also followed in the second section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange . Horiba has been listed in the first section of both exchanges since 1982. To grow outside of Japan, Horiba founded Olson-Horiba Incorporated (USA) in 1970 together with the US emissions tester Olson. In 1972 several branches are opened. In 1976 Horiba developed Japan's first energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence analyzer. In 1978, Horiba established the company motto Omoshiro Okashiku ("amusing and funny"), which is still valid today and which is translated in English as "Joy and Fun". Horiba opened a sales office in Singapore in 1985 . 1989 branches in Austria and Korea follow . Horiba GmbH founded in October 1987. In 1987 Horiba entered into a cooperation with the French company ABX SA.

In 1990 the first Mid-Long Term Management Plan (MLMAP) started, with which Horiba defined its corporate goals for the next 16 years. In the same year, HORIBA spun off the "Analytical Instruments Division". Irvine is headquartered in the USA. Eight years later, HORIBA International was founded as a management company for Horiba Instruments Inc. in North America. At the same time, the US subsidiary STEC Instrument Inc. was merged into Horiba / STEC Inc. Horiba Instruments became a world leader in instrumental analysis and measurement technology.

Almost exactly 40 years after the company was founded, Atsushi Horiba took over the management of the company from his father as President and CEO in 1992. Further branches were opened, for example in Sweden in 1993 or in Beijing in 1996 . In 1993, Horiba sold the world's first wireless pH meter in the “Scientific” division. Other new products that Horiba brought onto the market in the 1990s were the XRF (X-ray fluorescence analysis) microscope (1994), with which the content of chemical elements in a sample volume can be determined, or measurement systems for quality control of flat screens (1997). Horiba was the first metrology company to receive ISO-9001 certification for quality management in Japan in 1993 and a year later by the British Standard Institute (BSI) . In 1997 Horiba took over the French company Yobin Yvon SA, which manufactures optical components, and thereby made it a subsidiary.

From 2000

In order to bundle the service functions in Japan, Horiba Techno Service CO., LTD. founded. In 2002 the entire entry into the Chinese market followed with the establishment of Horiba Instruments Co., Ltd. in Shanghai. The development of the world's first "on board" vehicle measurement system by Horiba in 2002 made it possible to measure and evaluate vehicle exhaust gases under real conditions.

As part of the company's 50th anniversary, the “Dr. Masao Horiba Award “: The award supports young scientists outside the Horiba Group in their research in the field of analysis and measurement technology.

In 2013 Horiba took over the process analytics division of the US company Cameron with a view to building up the future core business in the area of "Process & Environmental Systems". In 2014, the company expanded the biomedical product area with the acquisition of Photon Technology International.

At the end of March, Horiba ATS and the Spanish Polytechnic Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) confirmed a cooperation to develop a mobile measurement system for height simulation. This takes into account the trend towards mobile emission measurement of vehicles ( Real Driving Emissions , RDE).

In 2015, Horiba acquired the development service provider and test site operator MIRA.

Company founder Masao Horiba died on July 14, 2015 at the age of 90.

In September 2015, the VW emissions scandal was started using a portable Horiba OBS-2200 exhaust gas measurement system ( Portable Emission Measurement System , PEMS) and a Pegasor Model (PPS-M) .

The German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) officially named the test center of Horiba Europe GmbH in Oberursel, Hesse , as a technical service in December 2015.
