Life

From 1954 to 1961, Blume studied Classical Philology and English at the Universities of Göttingen , Munich and Durham . Even as a student in Göttingen, Blume took part in performances of Greek tragedies in the original language, of which tape recordings have been preserved. In 1961 he was in Göttingen with his dissertation research on language and style of writing ὕψους περὶ Dr. phil. doctorate , in 1962 he passed the first state examination for higher teaching post.

From 1962 he was assistant to Martin Safel at the University of Münster , until the publication of his dissertation (May 6, 1963) as a representative. In Münster, Blume staged several Roman comedies and Greek tragedies in the original language with students from the Classical Philology Department. In 1972 he qualified as a professor for classical philology. In 1976 he was appointed adjunct professor and in 1980 professor. In 2000 he retired, but continues to work in research and teaching. Since 1984 he has headed the “Graeca”, a Greek reading group founded by Heinrich Dörrie.

Blume dealt with the ancient theory of poetry at the beginning of his academic career. In addition to his dissertation on the script of the sublime ( Pseudo-Longinos , περὶ ὕψους) he made a word index of the script for the reprint of the edition by Otto Jahn and Johannes Vahlen . His real research focus was ancient drama, especially Menander's comedies. After his habilitation thesis on Menander's Samia , he published a monograph on the poet (1998) and a bilingual edition of Dyskolos (2007). His introduction to the ancient theater went through three editions and was translated into Greek. There are also translations of Greek tragedies into German: Euripides , Iphigenie in Aulis (2014) and Aeschylus , Sieben gegen Theben (2017).

As a doctoral supervisor, he supervised the dissertations of Karl-Heinz Gerschmann , Susanne Gödde and Theodor Heinze, among others .
