Horst H. Baumann (born June 19, 1934 in Aachen ; † May 24, 2019 ) was a German artist , designer and photographer who lived and worked in Düsseldorf and was best known for his laser art.

Life

Baumann studied metallurgical engineering from 1954 to 1957 (and from 1972 to 1974 pedagogy) at RWTH Aachen University and as a late student from 1994 to 2004 philosophy / media at Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf .

Baumann has worked as a photographer and designer since 1957 and as a light artist since 1966 . From 1963 to 1964 he was visiting lecturer at the Ulm School of Design .

In 1977 Baumann took part in documenta 6 in Kassel and, assisted by Peter Hertha , installed his Laserscape Kassel, the world's first permanent laser sculpture (from 1979).

Other installations by Baumann are the light-time level at the Rheinturm in Düsseldorf (1982), the neon sculpture “Passkreuz” in Bielefeld-Sennestadt (1988) and the Olympic bar on the Rheinturm Düsseldorf, redesigned from the light-time level in 2003.

In 1956, 1958 and 1960 Horst H. Baumann was represented at the photokina Cologne and was also a prizewinner there.

His work has been exhibited internationally, including in 1965 at the Gallery of Modern Art in New York and in 1967 and 1969 at the Biennale des Jeunes in Paris (winner).
