Horst Hennig (born June 6, 1937 in Leipzig ) is a German chemist and professor. From 1987 to 1990 he was rector of the University of Leipzig .

Life

Horst Hennig grew up in Leipzig and attended elementary and high school there from 1943 to 1955. After graduating from high school , he began studying chemistry at the University of Leipzig . The diploma thesis " I. The system ferrocene - Ferricinium II. Metal chelates of ferrocene-substituted β-diketones " he wrote in 1960 under the direction of Leopold Wolf . The supervisor of his dissertation on the subject of “ Comparative Complex Chemical Studies on Ferrocene- and Benzene-Substituted 1,3-Diketones ” was also Leopold Wolf. Hennig was in 1964 at the University of Leipzig Dr. rer. nat. doctorate after he was already working as a research assistant at the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry 1960-1964. 1964–1969 he was senior scientific assistant. On September 1, 1969, he was appointed lecturer for inorganic chemistry at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig . On January 26, 1970 he received the Facultas docendi for inorganic chemistry; on June 9, 1971 he received his doctorate as Dr. sc. nat., which corresponds to today's habilitation . Topic of the work: “ Complex chemistry of NH-acidic ligands. "

After a call to the Humboldt University in Berlin had failed due to differences in the intended research program, Hennig worked as Full Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Leipzig from September 1, 1977 . From 1980 to 1986 Hennig was Vice Rector for Natural Sciences at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig.

Hennig has been a full member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences since November 11, 1985 . On June 16, 1988 he was elected a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR . In 1986 he was honored with the Gustav Hertz Prize of the University of Leipzig and in 2002 with the Wilhelm Ostwald Medal of the Saxon Academy of Sciences. Since 1993 he has been a member of the learned society Leibniz Society of Sciences in Berlin .

From 1987 to 1990 he was rector of the University of Leipzig.

His most important academic students include Detlef Rehorek (until 1991 o. Prof. for Inorganic Chemistry, University of Leipzig; now: Johnson Matthey , Belgium), as well as Professors Roland Benedix and Reiner Stich (both HTWK Leipzig), Astrid Rehorek ( FH Cologne ) and Roland Spitzner ( Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg ). Uwe Witzenhausen is the owner and managing director of the Wichem environmental and analysis service, Unstruttal .

Hennig has been married since 1964 and has a daughter and a granddaughter.

Works

In around 330 scientific papers and more than 60 patents, Hennig has reported on important research contributions on complex chemistry, photochemistry (especially photocatalysis) and applied chemistry. He is the co-author of two book publications:
