Life

Horst Niesyto studied pedagogy , psychology and sociology in the field of social pedagogy at the University of Tübingen and the Freiburg University of Education . After graduation, he worked full-time as a youth leader in Frankfurt / Main at the Protestant Church (1977–1980), as a youth education officer in Erbach at the youth education center of the Odenwaldkreis (1981–1990) and as a lecturer in Karlsruhe at the civil service school (1991–1996). In connection with a media educational rural youth project in the Odenwald , he received his doctorate in 1991 at the University of Tübingen on experience production with media . He then worked as a lecturer at the universities in Karlsruhe (youth sociology) and Tübingen (media education) and as a scientific project advisor at the University of Dresden (Institute for Social Education).

Scientific Research

In his work, Horst Niesyto examined social aspects in media contexts and a. the study "Media Education and Socio-Cultural Differences" (2000). He published analyzes on the “digital divide” in society, digital capitalism and other topics from a media and societal critical perspective.

Niesyto is committed to strengthening action-oriented and political-cultural media education that promotes (digital) media for self-expression, communication, personal development, learning and social participation. He specified this for different educational fields of action, in particular for film education, intercultural media education and the cooperation of school and extracurricular media education.

An important object of his research is part of a socio-aesthetic approach the question of milieu sensitive concepts of media literacy and subject-oriented methods in the active media work. He carried out international projects in media education practice research ("VideoCulture" and "Children in Communication about Migration").

Another topic is the integration of visual research methods, in particular the development of a world-oriented image and film hermeneutics for the interpretation and analysis of media productions created by children and young people. The guiding research assumption is the thesis: “Anyone who wants to find out something about the ideas, attitudes to life and world experience of children and young people in today's media society should give them the chance to - in addition to spoken and written - also by means of their own, self- created To express media products ”.

Education and professional engagement

In 2009, Horst Niesyto was one of the initiators of the Media Education Manifesto, which called for comprehensive and sustained promotion of media education in science and research as well as at all levels of educational practice. From 2009 to 2014 he was the spokesman for the “No education without media!” Initiative, a nationwide association of media education organizations. From 2008 to 2012 he was chairman of the media pedagogy section of the German Society for Educational Science and in 2011 organized the “media pedagogical congress” in Berlin as part of the “No education without media!” Initiative.

Horst Niesyto also advocated basic media education training for all educational specialists and contributed to the development of an “orientation framework for the development of curricula for media education courses and study components”. In Baden-Württemberg, Horst Niesyto was appointed to the advisory board for the 2016 educational plan reform by the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs and accompanied the consultations for a “leading perspective on media education”. He was a member of numerous advisory boards and commissions, including the media education expert commission at the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the youth media protection commission of the state media authorities (KJM) and advisory boards for research projects.
