Horst Rollnik (born April 15, 1931 in Berlin ; † September 28, 2011 in Bonn ) was a German theoretical physicist .

Life

Rollnik studied at the Free University of Berlin , where he obtained his diploma in physics in 1953 and his doctorate in theoretical nuclear physics and quantum field theory under Günther Ludwig in 1956 . As a post-doctoral student he was an assistant at the Free University of Berlin and at the University of Heidelberg and was a research associate at CERN for two years and also a visiting professor at the University of Bern. From 1962 to 1964 he was head of department (working group high energy physics) at Forschungszentrum Jülich and completed his habilitation in 1963 in Bonn in theoretical physics. In 1964 he was offered a professorship at the University of Bonn . In 1996 he was in Bonn emeritus . From 1969 he was also an honorary professor at the University of Vienna .

Horst Rollnik was President of the German Physical Society from 1980 to 1981 . On July 2, 1987, Rollnik received an honorary doctorate from the Faculty of Physics at Bielefeld University and he was an honorary doctor from the United Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna.

In 1975 he was the first chairman of the conference of the faculties of physics founded on his initiative . He was significantly involved in the establishment of the DPG physics center in Bad Honnef and in the establishment of the high-performance computing center (HLRZ) in the Jülich Research Center (on whose supervisory board he was). Rollnik was chairman of the study reform commission of North Rhine-Westphalia and, after reunification, a member of the physics working group of the Science Council for the evaluation of the former academy institutes of the GDR.

On March 15, 2011 he was awarded honorary membership of the German Physical Society (DPG), along with the golden badge of honor. He was a member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences (1978).

Rollnik also became known for his two-volume textbook on quantum mechanics .
