Schnellhardt compromise

During the EU's “vodka war” before 2006, there were bitter discussions in the European Union about whether beverages that were not distilled from grain or potatoes should be called “ vodka ”.

The trigger was the beverage company Diageo , which produces its drink “ Cîroc vodka” exclusively from grapes . The governments of the states of the EU “ vodka belt ” argued that vodka should only be made from grain or potatoes, as well as beet sugar and molasses . Many other EU governments turned against this.

The Schnellhardt Compromise, proposed and enforced by Horst Schnellhardt, finally stipulated that vodka can also be made from other foods, but must then be declared as "Vodka made from ...".
