The Horton River is a river in the Inuvik and Sahtu Regions in the Northwest Territories, as well as in the Kitikmeot Region in Nunavut , Canada .
The river flows into the Amundsen Gulf and thus belongs to the catchment area of the Arctic Ocean . Only the first few kilometers from its source are in Nunavut .
Course of the river
The river has its origin in a small lake about 100 km north of the Dease Arm , a bay of the Great Bear Lake . It flows through the Smoking Hills and flows east of Cape Bathurst into Franklin Bay and the Amundsen Gulf. There it forms a small river delta, about 125 km northwest of the Paulatuk community . Around 1800 the estuary was 100 km north of its present location, on Harrowby Bay on the west side of Cape Bathurst. A meander arm eroded its surrounding area and led to the diversion of the river.
