Hospet , officially called Hosapete since 2014 ( Kannada : ಹೊಸಪೇಟೆ Hosapēṭe [ ˈhosʌpeːʈe ]), is a city in the Indian state of Karnataka with around 206,000 inhabitants (2011 census).

Hospet is located in the Bellary district around 350 kilometers north of Bangalore and 60 kilometers west of the district capital Bellary at an altitude of around 480 meters on the Deccan Plateau in eastern central Carnataka. Hospet is the capital of the Taluk of the same name (sub-district). The Tungabhadra River flows a few kilometers north of the city and is dammed up to the Tungabhadra reservoir west of Hospet . Twelve kilometers northeast of Hospet is the ruins of Hampi , the former capital of the Vijayanagar empire.

Located at the intersection of the national highways NH 13 and NH 63 and the railway line from Hubli to Guntakal , Hospet has good transport connections. The city itself has no special sights, but Hospet plays a certain tourist role as a starting point for a visit to the Hampi World Heritage Site. The Muslim Muharram festival is celebrated with fire walkers and other attractions.

The area around Hospet is rich in iron ore deposits . There has been a significant mining boom since the turn of the millennium, which has led to enormous environmental problems.

The city was built by Krishnadeva Raya (1509–1529), an important king of the kingdom of Vijayanagar, in memory of his mother Nagaladevi. The city was originally called Nagalapura.

The name Hospet or Hosapete means "new city" in the local language Kannada . To mark the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of Karnataka in 2006, the state government decided, following a proposal by the writer UR Ananthamurthy , to change the English names of 13 cities in Karnataka to their Kannada name forms. As a result, Hospet should be renamed to Hosapete . The Indian central government under Prime Minister Manmohan Singh initially did not agree to the name change. Only under the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi , who was newly elected in 2014 , did the renaming officially take effect on November 1, 2014.
