Hospital St. Spiritus (Münden)
The St. Spiritus Hospital was a hospital foundation in the medieval city of Münden in what is now southern Lower Saxony . The building, which no longer exists today, was located in the suburb of Blume . The hospital is one of the few buildings that were built outside of the city fortifications of Münden . It stood on the opposite bank of the Werra next to the old Werra bridge .
The hospital was first mentioned in 1327, when Duke Otto the Mild privileged it by exempting it from taxes . The hospital was first associated with a chapel in 1414 when a nearby courtyard property was acquired. Duke Otto the One-Eyed also exempted this property from taxes. Starting in 1416, indulgences were traded in favor of the hospital for over eight years . Through an agreement between the city of Münden and the Steina monastery , the hospital received additional income.
The hospital was run by the Calendar Brotherhood . Since the secular order showed signs of decay through opulence and feasting, Duchess Elisabeth , who resided in Münden, reorganized the hospital in 1542. She placed it under the joint sovereignty of the duchy and the city of Münden. Both sides were able to determine the admission of hospital residents, of whom there were 12 people at the time. Above all, needy people such as the lame , blind and infirm were taken in. Despite the new regulations, the hospital continued to decline in the 16th century. The hospital was first destroyed in 1553 during the siege of Münden by the troops of Duke Heinrich II. It was rebuilt in 1576. During the siege of Münden by Tilly in the Thirty Years' War , the hospital was destroyed again in 1626. A copper engraving by Merian from 1654 shows the hospital building as a ruin . In 1660 it was rebuilt, as a result of which the inmates were no longer fed. For lack of funds on the part of the hospital, only 10 inmates were admitted in the 18th century. At the beginning of the 19th century there were no more permanent residents, but eight beneficiaries who were given natural produce . During this time the building served as a shelter for vagabonds and beggars . In 1865 the hospital was demolished and its assets were transferred to the foundation of the former St. Spiritus Hospital in Münden . The foundation for charitable purposes is still run by the city of Hann. Münden managed.
In 1897 an infirmary was founded in Hannoversch Münden , which set up a home in the old town in 1906. It was later renamed the Duchess Elisabeth Stift in honor of the Duchess Elisabeth's services to the St. Spiritus Hospital. Today the monastery is a nursing home in Hann. Münden.
