The Hougang United Football Club is a Singaporean football club that currently plays in the S. League . In 2006, the merger of the clubs Paya Lebar Punggol Football Club and Sengkang Marine Football Club resulted in the Sengkang Punggol Football Club , and for the 2011 season it was renamed to its current name.
Club history
Marine Castle was one of the predecessor associations of Sengkang Punggol and was founded in 1981 by residents of the Marine Parade district . All founders of the club were fans of Newcastle United , which is why it was decided to name the club Marine Castle United.
The club's successes in the senior sector were hardly available until 1995. Nevertheless, in 1995 they applied for one of the 8 places in the new S.League. However, the application was denied by the FAS. After success in the FA Cup in 1995 and winning the unofficial National Football League in 1996, the club again applied for a place in the S.League. This time the application was followed and Marine Castle became a new member of the S.League alongside Gombak United . In 2002 the club changed its name to Sengkang Marine Football Club. The sengkang in the name was added to attract more fans from the neighboring district. With 8th place achieved in 2002 the highest ranking in the league so far. The result from the previous year was repeated in 2003. Nevertheless, the club had to retire from the S.League at the end of the season for financial reasons.
Paya Lebar Punggol FC joined the S.League in 2005 and finished its first season in 10th place. The following year, Paya Lebar Punggol and Marine Castle merged and ultimately merged to form what is now the Sengkang Punggol Football Club. Since the merger, the club finished 11th at the end of the season.
Stadion
The club plays its home games at the Jalan Besar Stadium in Kallang . The sports facility has a capacity of 6000 spectators. The owner and operator is the Singapore Sports Council.
