Howard Lydecker

Howard "Babe" Lydecker (* 8. June 1911 in Havana , Cuba ; † 26. September 1969 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American film technicians for visual effects and special effects , the twice for the Oscar for Best Special Effects was nominated .

Life

Lydecker and his three-year older brother Theodore Lydecker began in the early 1930s, her career as a film technician at Mascot Pictures Corporation of Nat Levine and worked after the merger of Mascot Pictures Corporation with Monogram Pictures and Liberty Pictures to Republic Pictures in 1935 in this film production company whose director was the film producer Herbert J. Yates of Consolidated Film Industries . Between 1935 and 1953, Howard and Theodore Lydecker were among the most important film technicians in the field of miniature special effects, with Babe Lydecker expanding the Republic Pictures carpentry workshop into a special effects studio with around twenty film technicians.

In 1935 he created the first special effects for the films The Fighting Marines and The Phantom Empire and worked on the production of nearly 400 films until his death.

At the Academy Awards in 1941 he was nominated for an Oscar for the best special effects for the first time, with William Bradford , Bud Thackery and Herbert Norsch for the film Women in War (1940).

He received another nomination in this category in 1943 together with the sound engineer Daniel J. Bloomberg for the war film Enterprise Tigersprung (Flying Tigers, 1942). In this film, his talent for miniature special effects became clear: he used mock-ups and miniature models and not a single real airplane during the filming of the battle scenes of an air wing of the US Air Force against the Japanese Air Force in China with numerous air battles , plane crashes, crashes and so on of the entire film production.
