Hoya kerrii , colloquially also known as the heart leaf plant, heart plant or little darling because of its leaf shape, is a species ofthe wax flower genus ( Hoya ) in the subfamily of the silk plant family (Asclepiadoideae). It occurs from China to Java.
description
Vegetative characteristics
Hoya kerrii grows as a climbing, perennial herbaceous plant that can reach heights of up to 4 meters. The pale and bare stems have a diameter of up to 7 mm. The opposite arranged leaves are divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. The petiole has a length of 0.5 to 2 cm. The simple, thick-fleshed, bald leaf blade is inverted-heart-shaped with a length of 4 to 12 cm and a width of 5 to 9.5 cm. The two-lobed spreader tip is cut or indented in the middle 1 to 1.75 cm deep. The base of the blades is rounded or broadly wedge-shaped.
Generative characteristics
The 2 to 6 cm long inflorescence stem has a diameter of about 3 mm. The many-flowered inflorescence (up to 25 flowers) has a diameter of 4 to 5 cm. The hermaphrodite flower is radially symmetrical and five-fold with a double flower envelope . The five thin sepals are 1.3 to 1.8 cm long and hairy downy. The five petals are oblong-oval, 2.5 mm long and blunt; outside they are downy hairy. The corolla has a diameter of 9 to 11 mm, is whitish and has papillae and / or thick, downy, standing hairs on the inside. The corolla lobes are oval to rounded triangular, measure 4 to 5 by 5 mm and are fused at the base. They are strongly bent back. The corolla is pink to purple in color, the corolla lobes 2.5 mm long, relatively broad and indented median. Basally they are fused, apically pointed and strongly bent back. The staminal corona lobes are up to 2.5 mm wide and indented on the upper side. The outer extension is broad and round, the inner extension is pointed. The pollinia measure about 1 mm in length. The flowers of Hoya kerrii produce a relatively large amount of nectar, which is also reddish to brownish in color. They smell only weakly or not at all. The anthesis lasts about 2 weeks.
distribution
Hoya kerrii occurs in southern China , Vietnam , Laos , Cambodia , Thailand and Indonesia ( Java island ). The type locality is the Doi Sootep Mountains west of Chiang Mai (Northern Thailand) at an altitude of about 390 meters.
Taxonomy
The first description of Hoya kerrii was in 1911 by William Grant Craib in Bulletin of Miscellaneous Information Kew 1911 , 10, pp. 418-419. One specimen was collected by Arthur Francis George Kerr in 1910 or 1911 at the type location in Thailand: "Chiengmai in eng jungle on Doi Sootep, 390 m" and bloomed in August 1911 in Kew Gardens . He notices that this specimen differs from the "wild" specimens at the type site in that it has downy hair on the stems, pedicels and leaves. He attributes this difference to the different climatic conditions at the location where the type was found and at Kew Gardens (London). Just one year later (1912) was Hoya kerrii of Julien Noël Costantin as a variety to Hoya obovata asked. Today it is generally recognized as an independent species (e.g. Christiane Hoffmann, Ruurd van Donkelaar and Focke Albers in Albers & Meve (2002)). However, Hoya kerrii is very close to Hoya obovata Decne. related, which is widespread in Southeast Asia to the Fiji Islands.
The species name Hoya kerrii honors the British doctor, plant collector and author of botanical works Arthur Francis George Kerr .
