Hripsime Janpoladyan

Hripsime Dschanpoladjan ( Armenian Հռիփսիմե Ջանփոլադյան , Russian Рипсимэ Джанполадян ; born August 26, 1918 in the Democratic Republic of Armenia ; † August 30, 2004 in St. Petersburg ) was an Armenian - Soviet - Russian orientalist , archaeologist and historian .

Life

Janpoladjan came from a wealthy aristocratic Armenian family who had a license to exploit all salt deposits in Nakhchivan . Janpoladjan was born on the way to Tbilisi when her parents Mikael and Iranjak Janpoladjan fled the pogrom against the Armenians in Nakhchivan . When Soviet power had established itself in Armenia, the Janpoladjan family settled in Yerevan .

After graduating with honors, Janpoladjan studied oriental studies and archeology at the Yerevan State University . After graduating, she took part in the excavation of the fortress town of Teischebani on the hill Kamir Blur southwest of Yerevan on the left bank of the Hrasdans . There she met Boris Borissowitsch Piotrowski , an employee of the Leningrad Hermitage in 1941 , whom she married in 1944 in Yerevan, where he had been evacuated from the blocked Leningrad . Here she had her son Mikhail , who later continued his parents' work.

After the German-Soviet War , Janpoladjan was a research assistant at the Archeology Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in Moscow , the Art Academy of the USSR in Moscow and the Orient Department of the Leningrad Hermitage. Her main research interests were the Armenian Middle Ages and Byzantine glass production . Their investigations during the excavations in Dvin showed that Dvin was an important center of glass production. After her husband's death, she published the works he left behind, including the history of the Hermitage and the travel diary.

Janpoladjan died after a long and serious illness. She was buried next to her husband in the Smolensk Cemetery in St. Petersburg .
