Santiago de Huayallamaca ( Aymara : Wayllamarka ) is a town in the Oruro department in the highlands of the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Santiago de Huayllamarca is the administrative seat of the province of Nor Carangas and the central place of the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Huayllamarca . The place is located at an altitude of 3893  m in the river valley of the Río Huayllamarca on the eastern slope of the Serranía de Huayllamarca , an approximately 100 km long ridge that extends on the Bolivian Altiplano in a north-west-south-east direction.

Huayllamarca is located between the Andean mountain ranges of the Cordillera Oriental and the Cordillera Occidental in the Andean dry climate of the Altiplano . The region's climate is typical of the time of day , in which the mean temperature fluctuations during the day are more pronounced than during the seasons.

The mean annual precipitation is about 330 mm and falls 80 percent in the months of December to March (see Huayllamarca climate diagram). Huayllamarca is located at a distance of 121 kilometers by road northwest of Oruro , the capital of the department of the same name.

From Oruro, the paved road Ruta 1 leads north towards Caracollo and La Paz . Five kilometers behind Oruro, a dirt road branches off to the northwest and after another 44 kilometers crosses the Río Desaguadero . From here the road leads to the southwest via La Joya and Lajma and after 42 kilometers reaches Chuquichambi .
