Hubert Berchtold (born July 28, 1950 in Alberschwende ) is a former Austrian ski racer . The giant slalom and slalom specialist won one race in the World Cup and four competitions in the European Cup .

biography

In the 1960s, Berchtold achieved his first successes in the junior sector. However, his young career was interrupted by several injuries and in 1968 he missed the entire season with a broken foot. At the beginning of the 1970s he achieved good results at the Austrian championships: in 1970 he was runner-up in the slalom, and in 1971 he finished third in the downhill.

In the European Cup Berchtold had in the 1971/72 season a great success. With two giant slalom victories in Tarvisio and Saalfelden as well as another three podium places he won the giant slalom classification, was third in the slalom classification and in the overall classification only the Italian Ilario Pegorari achieved more points. After this success, the Vorarlberger started in the World Cup from next season .
In addition, after finishing second behind Sepp Heckelmiller in the first giant slalom at the “Silvretta-Tropäe” in Ischgl on April 15, 1972 , he won another giant slalom there on April 16, ahead of Reinhard Tritscher and Heckelmiller.

His first and, in the winter of 1972/73, only result in the points, i.e. among the top ten, was sixth place in the giant slalom in Megève on January 19, 1973. Completely surprisingly, Berchtold, who was not one of the elite runners and therefore the number 23, won wore the giant slalom of Saalbach-Hinterglemm on December 16, 1973 in front of his compatriots Thomas Hauser , Hansi Hinterseer and Franz Klammer . Another time he came in the 1973/74 season but not in the top ten. Nevertheless, with his victory, he finished seventh in the giant slalom world cup. In the European Cup he only contested a few races this winter, but he was able to win the giant slalom in house . He achieved three victories on February 16 and 17, 1974 at the Kikerurdbaaken on Holmenkollen, when he won slalom, giant slalom and combination.

In the 1974/75 World Cup season , Berchtold took tenth place three times and eighth place once. In the European Cup, however, he came on the podium twice. Due to an injury, he was late in taking part in races in the winter of 1975/76. In the European Cup, Vorarlberg managed another victory in the giant slalom in Bizau , but in the World Cup he remained without points. The following summer Berchtold announced his resignation.
