Hubert Hammerer (born September 10, 1925 in Egg ; † March 24, 2017 in Vorarlberg ) was an Austrian sports shooter and Olympic champion in 1960.

Life

His father was an international marksman in the 1930s. Motivated by his father's sporting activities, Hubert Hammerer began shooting at the age of 12. At the age of 17 he achieved the Austrian youth record in the three-position match and achieved the same result as the reigning world champion.

For the participation in the Olympic Games in London in 1948 Hammerer could not find a competitive weapon and voluntarily renounced the participation in the Olympics.

1952 was not a lucky star either: Hammerer, a trained master carpenter , put his left hand into a milling machine and lost his thumb. He was training again just six days after his accident, but participation in the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki was impossible. Despite world-class performances, he was not nominated for the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne .

In 1960 at the Olympic Games in Rome it should finally work. In an exciting fight with the Swiss Hans Rudolf Spillmann (silver) and the Russian Wassili Borissow (bronze), Hubert Hammerer won the long-awaited gold medal in the free rifle three-position competition after seven hours of exciting competition. It was the only gold medal for Austria at these Olympic Games.

Hubert Hammerer was, among other things, European champion in 1958 in crossbow shooting, fifth in the World Cup in the 300 m free rifle in 1958 and a total of 43 times Austrian champion. He ended his active career in 1966 and lived as a master carpenter and owner of a weapons shop in Egg in the Bregenzerwald . In his home country he was a member of the Egg Comradeship Association and an honorary member of the Egg shooting club.

In 1974 he received the Gold Medal of Merit of the Republic of Austria .

On March 24, 2017, Hammerer died after a long illness at the age of 91, leaving behind his wife Olga, five children, two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
