Hubert Hammerschmidt (born August 6, 1914 in Scharnitz ; † February 19, 1994 in Thiersee ) was an Austrian winter sports enthusiast who was successful in ski jumping , cross-country skiing and Nordic combined . In addition, at the beginning of his career he successfully competed in races as an alpine ski racer .

Career

Hammerschmidt started skiing early and began as an alpine skier in the late 1920s. Hammerschmidt, who embarked on a military career a little later, then switched to the Army Sports Club and moved to Innsbruck . In 1931 he became Tyrolean youth champion and was also able to win at the Innsbruck Winter Sports Week in 1934. As a result, however, he had to admit defeat to the increasing specialization of the alpine disciplines. However, he was able to celebrate successes before the Second World War and won the Hahnenkamm race in Kitzbühel in 1937 . He also secured second place in St. Moritz and became Tyrolean national champion. In 1940 he celebrated his first success in ski jumping . So he finished second in the New Year's competition in Garmisch-Partenkirchen .

After the Second World War, Hammerschmidt only started in the Nordic ski area. After he moved to Thiersee and joined SV Thiersee , he secured two fourth places in jumping and Nordic combined at the Austrian Championships in 1947. He also won silver with the cross-country skiing relay. At the following Austrian championships in 1948, Hammerschmidt secured his first and only national championship in cross-country skiing with the Tyrol 1 relay . He then traveled with the team to the 1948 Winter Olympics , which also counted as the Nordic World Ski Championships , in St. Moritz. There Hammerschmidt showed consistently good performances, but could not place in any of the three Nordic disciplines in the top ten. In the ski jumping singles from the Olympic hill he reached 19th place, before he finished 68th in the cross-country skiing singles over 18 km. In the Nordic Combined, after a 14th place in jumping and 30th place in cross-country skiing, he finished 23rd in the individual competition.

After the Olympic Games, Hammerschmidt withdrew from international sport, but continued to play regional ski jumping and cross-country skiing competitions well into the 1950s.
