Hubert Olbrich (* 15. April 1924 in Breslau , † 16th July 2019 ) was a German food technologist , the long time in Berlin director of its sugar museum and at the Technical University of Berlin professor of molasses - and Bagassetechnik was.

Life

Hubert Olbrich originally wanted to become a country doctor, so in 1942 he began studying medicine in Breslau , which was interrupted by military service. After the war he wanted to continue studying in Halle / Saale, but in 1946 he was de-registered as a militarist because of his service in the German Wehrmacht as a medical ensign on a minesweeper .

Olbrich then became a farm worker, then a distillery assistant , volunteer and working student in distilleries, vinegar, liqueur and yeast factories in Blankenau near Schildau, Torgau, Cottbus, Dresden, Leipzig, Dessau and Berlin. He then completed several technical and legal academic and professional training courses: Distillery Technician (1949), Distillery Engineer (1950). Dr. agr. (1952), graduate engineer (1960). From 1952 to 1956 he was a research assistant at the Berlin food technologist Bruno Drews . In 1960 he became a trainee lawyer, in 1963 he completed a training station in Munich at the Federal Patent Office and the Federal Patent Court , and in 1964 he became an assessor.

In 1969 he completed his habilitation in food technology at the Technical University of Berlin, where he was also appointed a private lecturer and in 1973 an adjunct professor. At the state institute for the sugar industry , he became scientific advisor, scientific senior councilor and scientific director. After the integration of the state institute into the Technical University of Berlin in 1977, he was appointed professor for the technology of by-products of the sugar industry (molasses and bagasse technology) until his retirement in 1989.

In total, Olbrich has published around 675 publications, including several books.

Work for the Berlin Sugar Museum

As a part-time job, Olbrich has been in charge of the Berlin Sugar Museum since 1972, which he "saved from threatened destruction and expanded." To support the museum, he initiated the establishment of a friends' association in 1982, of which he has been an honorary member since 1994. Olbrich succeeded in turning the Sugar Museum into the Berlin State Museum through a resolution by the Berlin House of Representatives in 1988. In 1989 the sugar museum was reopened with a new presentation. After his retirement, Olbrich remained in office until September 1994 as director of the sugar museum. He edited 33 volumes of the "Writings from the Sugar Museum"; the series was discontinued in 1998.
