from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hugo Eckensberger (born June 3, 1865 in Chemnitz , † September 17, 1942 in Wiesbaden ) was a German newspaper publisher .

Life

Eckensberger was the first son and third child of master weaver Carl Eduard Eckensberger and his wife Amalie Louise, nee. Ruttloff, born in Chemnitz. His parents had married on April 5, 1861. Her son was baptized on June 18, 1865 in St. Johannis Church. As the weaving trade was being displaced by ever larger textile factories, especially in Saxony, his father had to give up his job and became a beer traveler. Eckensberger therefore stayed in different cities from 1886 on, but he always returned to his hometown, where he was registered with his main residence until 1898. In the meantime, Eckensberger lived in Leipzig for a longer period (for example from 1899 to 1908). Here he applied for citizenship as a merchant in 1904 . In 1908 and 1909 he lived briefly in Berlin.

family

On April 1, 1889, Eckensberger married Helene Voigtmann, who also came from Chemnitz. Together they had a daughter Elli (* 1890) and a son Hans Carl Hugo , both of whom were born in Leipzig.

Publisher in Braunschweig

Eckensberger came to Braunschweig on April 13, 1909 , where he was initially accepted by Hermann Lauer in his publishing house. In 1910 it worked there as an authorized signatory and on November 28, 1911 , it became a partner in Lauer OHG. In 1912 a Mr. R. Isenburg was mentioned in the address book as authorized signatory and in 1917 named as co-owner. This publisher had published the Braunschweiger Zeitung Latest News , the impartial organ for the residence and duchy of Braunschweig , since 1897 . This magazine was initially delivered free of charge and had a circulation of up to 55,000 copies. From 1923 Eckensberger published this newspaper as sole owner and editor and publisher. In the meantime, the publishing house was converted into a limited partnership on January 1, 1926, and the manufacturer Gottlieb Paul Leonhardt from Dresden became a joint partner alongside Eckensberger. From April 1926 the newspaper was called Braunschweiger Latest News , until Eckensberger had to unite it with the Braunschweiger Landeszeitung under pressure from the National Socialist regime and give it to the Limbach publishing house.

During the Second World War he also took over the management of the publishing house from Bernhard Thalacker, who was orphaned without a successor. He had integrated his own son Hans into the publishing business at an early age, so that he could continue his business after his death.

In 1942 Eckensberger was treated for cancer in a private clinic in Wiesbaden, where he died.
