Hugo Jacobi (industrialist)

Hugo Jacobi (born November 28, 1834 in Osterfeld (Oberhausen) , † October 17, 1917 in Düsseldorf ) was a German engineer and mining industrialist .

Life

After attending the trade school in Hagen and studying mechanical engineering at the Polytechnic School in Karlsruhe , Jacobi entered the service of the steelworks union and dealership Jacobi, Haniel & Huyssen (JHH), which his grandfather Gottlob Jacobi co-founded . After a study trip to England, he became a senior engineer in 1866 and, in 1873, when the ironworks union was converted into a stock corporation, he was promoted to the board of the new Gutehoffnungshütte . At the same time, he took over the technical management of the GHH mechanical engineering companies in Sterkrade and Ruhrort . In this role he introduced chain manufacturing in the early 1880s and founded new departments and a. for bridge building . Shortly before his retirement, he took over the management of Gutehoffnungshütte for one year as successor to Carl Lueg .

In terms of association policy, Jacobi worked, among other things, as co-founder and chairman of the Rheinisch-Westfälischer Maschinenbauanstalten Association (1890), from which the Association of German Mechanical Engineering Institutions (VDMA) emerged two years later .
