Hugo Julius (born September 15, 1870 in Hamburg ; † May 21, 1949 ) was a German professional photographer in Hanover .

Life

Hugo Julius completed his photography apprenticeship in the photographic studio of his uncle Ignaz Julius in Hamburg. Ignaz Julius had opened a photographic studio in the “ Neuen Wall ” in Hamburg in 1863 and moved to the “ Grosse Bleichen ” in 1873 . Ignaz Julius had died around 1887 because his widow had advertised as the operator from 1888 onwards. From 1898 there is no longer any entry in the Hamburg address books.

From 1900 to 1902 he was managing director of Jean Baptiste Feilner's photographic studio in Braunschweig.

After his apprenticeship and a hike , Julius took up residence in Hanover.

In 1906 he became a partner in the photographic studio of the court photographer Albert Meyer , who ran his studio at " Georgstraße 24". Albert Meyer sold Julius his share in 1912. Julius kept the established studio name with the addition "Owner: Hugo Julius" until at least 1918.

“From his time in Braunschweig ” there is an anecdote about a failed photo by the writer Wilhelm Raabe : At first he did not want to be photographed, but then he was unable to position himself correctly, and when the time finally came - Hugo Julius got a lumbago . Raabe is said to have grumbled: "I didn't want it!"

The large studio was destroyed by the air raids on Hanover during World War II in June 1943. Only the facade of the first floor has survived (at today's house number 38). The alternative studio in the neighboring building, which was run by the son Kurt Julius , was also destroyed by bombs in October 1943.

"Hugo Julius died after a short illness on May 21, 1949."

The appointments as court photographer are unclear: While Albert Meyer was allowed to name King Albert of Saxony, who died in 1902, as well as the "Duke of Saxony-Altenburg " and the Duke of Saxony-Meiningen around 1900 , Hugo Julius was able to name the latter (whom he presumably bought with the company name) still cite the “Prince of Lippe-Detmold ”. In addition to numerous other recognitions, Hugo Julius received the “Grand Diploma de Honor” at the 1926 International Exhibition in Saragossa and was “made an honorary member” with this highest distinction.

family

Hugo Julius married Clara Abbelona Koch in 1900. The couple had three children: Ilse (* 1907), Kurt (* 1909) and Käthe (* 1910). The son Kurt Julius took over the father's studio, the daughter Ilse Julius ran her own studio in Hanover and the daughter Käthe Julius became a photo reporter and press manager in the film industry . She later married the film director Rudolf Jugert . The granddaughter Claudia Polak, who was born in Hanover, also works as a freelance photographer.
