Hugo Oehmichen (born March 10, 1843 in Borsdorf near Leipzig , † December 1932 in Düsseldorf ) was a German painter .

Life

Oehmichen was born as the son of a business owner in Borsdorf. He lost his mother at an early age, and the family soon moved to Brockwitz (now part of Coswig ) near Meißen. As a child he is said to have shown keen interest in puppet theater and manual skills, and visits to the training workshop of his brother, an art locksmith, made him want to become a locksmith too. He received his first drawing lessons when he and his brother were taking drawing lessons at Sunday School. The drawing teacher Koehler soon offered him private lessons because of his obvious talent.

Köhler recommended Oehmichen to the drawing and painting school of the Royal Porcelain Manufactory Meißen , whose director Carl Scheinert quickly arranged for the fourteen-year-old talent to study at the Royal Academy in Dresden . Oehmichen studied there from 1857 to 1864, especially with Julius Hübner and Adolf Ehrhardt . In 1862 he won the little silver medal of the academy, in 1864 the little gold medal for the picture Blessing of grandfather , which was bought by the Saxon king. 1866-1867 made a trip to Rome, where he painted some typical motifs of the Campagna. In 1867 he returned to Dresden. His painting The First Church Attendance After Convalescence caused his teacher Julius Huebner to advise Oehmichen to move to Düsseldorf, because there the " moral painting ", for which Oehmichen seemed particularly talented, was more popular than in Dresden and Oehmichen stayed in Düsseldorf Ludwig Knaus and Benjamin Vautier, among others , could find a variety of suggestions.

Around 1870 Oehmichen settled in Düsseldorf, where, under Vautier's influence, he preferred to paint genre pictures from popular life. His picture of death message , created under the influence of the Franco-Prussian War , depicting the delivery of news of the death of a soldier to his wife, was recognized by art critics and sold to England, a second version to the Wiesbaden Municipal Gallery.

In 1871 he married his cousin Emma Dietrich, the daughter of a landowner from Böhlitz (now in Mutzschen ). One of his children, Hans Oehmichen († 1952), studied mining and became mine director. Family life and the world of his children in the house and school offered Oehmichen a variety of motifs for genre paintings. He also often depicted rural and small-town life in Germany in paintings, for which he sought inspiration while traveling on the Moselle, Swabia, the Upper Rhine, in Hesse and Westphalia. For example, his painting The Tax Payday, which he bought from the Dresden gallery, was inspired by a scene he saw himself in the Rheinfelden town hall .

Many of his pictures were reproduced as engravings and thus found a larger audience.

Oehmichen was a member of the artists' associationMalkasten ” in Düsseldorf.

On January 15, 2017, an episode of the NDR's Lieb & Teuer program was broadcast, moderated by Janin Ullmann . A genre painting with card players by Hugo Oehmichen was discussed with the painting expert Ariane Skora.
