Karl Ludwig Adolf Ehrhardt (born November 21, 1813 in Berlin , † November 19, 1899 in Wolfenbüttel ) was a German painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

The muse of music

Adolf Ehrhardt attended the art academy in Berlin for a short time , but at the age of 19 he went to the art academy there in Düsseldorf in 1832 . There he was able to make his debut with his first pictures under the guidance of his teacher Wilhelm von Schadow .

In 1838 Ehrhardt settled in Dresden and became assistant to the history painter Eduard Bendemann . He had already become friends with him and his brother-in-law Julius Huebner during his studies in Düsseldorf. Together with Bendemann, Ehrhardt played a key role in decorating the royal palace , especially in various murals in the throne and ballrooms.

In 1846 Ehrhardt was awarded the title of "Professor", combined with a teaching position at the Dresden Art Academy. As such, he was inspired by works by Ludwig Richter and Ludwig Uhland , for example, when choosing a topic . In addition, he created commissioned works, such as altar paintings for churches and a series of cardboard boxes and color sketches for glass paintings for churches in Great Britain and Braunschweig, among others .

On the side, so to speak, Ehrhardt revised Pierre-Louis Bouvier's “Handbook of Oil Painting” and published “The Art of Painting” in 1885, in which he thought fundamentally about artistic training at the Academy.

Adolf Ehrhardt was married to Mathilde Brockhoff from Düsseldorf. Her sister Odila (1818–1895) was the wife of the history painter and Dresden professor Hermann Freihold Plüddemann (1809–1868), a companion of Adolf Ehrhardt.

Adolf Ehrhardt died in 1899 at the age of 86. His son Max first went to sea and had owned a machine factory in Wolfenbüttel since 1875.
