Todays use

The Straubing prison currently has in rule enforcement 845 detention places. The occupancy numbers keep changing slightly. Straubing is known as a place of detention for capital criminals with a prison sentence of six years or more. In addition, the Straubing prison differentiates between a department for prisoners who are in custody for the first time ( first execution ), prisoners who are still particularly young - between 22 and 27 years old (department for young prisoners) - and between prisoners who have already been convicted of criminal offenses several times were (rule enforcement). The Straubing prison also has a pre- trial detention department. In general, only prisoners on remand who can expect a long sentence are accommodated there. For a number of years there has also been a department for prisoners who have committed sexual offenses. This is called the Social Therapy Department (SothA).

In this correctional facility it is possible to learn several professions - among many others, since 2014 even "warehouse logistics specialist". In addition, prisoners can gain meaningful further training at the Fernuniversität Hagen or the Telekolleg while they are in prison.

The institution also has a special psychiatric department , the so-called House 3, which is also used for health care in other prisons. Further, there is a section for occupant, in which the measure according to § 66 StGB Sicherungsverwahrung was placed.

The correctional facility has a modern and secure visitor center.

She is also known for the annual performances of plays. These are performed by amateur actors (all prisoners). The Straubing prison is also known to the general public through the bazaar that takes place every year in October. Paintings and handicrafts are sold there. This bazaar is usually frequented by at least 3,000 visitors.

The Bavarian Prison Academy is also located in Straubing . However, it is not affiliated with Straubing Prison, but rather independent. In the JVS, prospective civil servants of the 2nd qualification level (formerly middle service ) are trained.
