The prison Regensburg was built by the Kingdom of Bavaria between 1900 and 1902 after only one and a half years of planning in neo-Renaissance style. Commissioning a district court prison on April 1, 1902. For the prevailing conditions the decor was comfortable and modern and was predominantly for the accommodation of remand prisoners of the District Court of Regensburg used.

During the Nazi era , as in most places of detention in the Third Reich, politically persecuted people were imprisoned. 244 Regensburg Jewish origin were temporarily imprisoned during the November pogroms on November 10, 1938 in the regional court prison in Regensburg. 15 of them were transported to Dachau concentration camp the next day .

Organizationally unique is the subordination of the prison to the public prosecutor's office in Regensburg from 1902 to 1945 and from 1957 to 1977. In 1977 the institution became independent under the Prison Act and today has a full-time director.

The prison has a capacity of 187 prison places. 161 for men and 27 for women, but the actual occupancy averaged 154, of which 135 were men and 19 were women.

Pretrial detention for men and women and initial and regular prison sentences are carried out in the prison . As an in-house business, the establishment has a vehicle operation with a fleet of vehicles and a locksmith's shop. Several external companies have small products manufactured in so-called entrepreneurial companies in the penal institution.
