It consisted of Institution I (Karmelitengasse 12) in the district of Bleich and Pfärrle , Institution II (Hochfeldstrasse 28 1/3) and the youth detention center (Hochfeldstrasse 28 1/5) in the district of Hochfeld . In total, it had a capacity of around 270 prison places.

With the opening of the newly built prison in Augsburg-Gablingen in 2015, all prisoners were subsequently relocated and the prison in Augsburg was closed until 2016.

history

The building of Partial Institution I in Karmelitengasse was originally the municipal granary before it became part of the monastery complex of the Carmelite Monastery for the Most Holy Sacrament , which can still be guessed at the institution church: The Severinskapelle was donated by Ludwig the Strict in 1276 and is therefore one of the oldest sacral building in Augsburg. Rebuilt by Markus Walser in 1578 , it became part of the Carmelite monastery from 1636 and was later located on the premises of the penal institution, where it was initially used as a bath and wash house and kitchen. It was only restored and returned to its original purpose in 1969 and 1970. After secularization by the city of Augsburg in 1802 and its use as a military hospital, the Kingdom of Bavaria acquired it for the penal system in 1814 and expanded it into an iron front fortress until 1817 . It was not until 1968 that a new building was added to the building complex, which housed the access, transport and purchasing departments until it was closed.

Part II and the youth detention center were located on the site of the former Prinz-Karl-Kaserne in the Bismarckviertel and were established there after the end of the Second World War in 1945. While a building was rebuilt for Institution II, this was not necessary for the youth institution. It was in the former barracks detention center.

In addition, the prison served for prison sentences of up to six months for all prisoners from the Augsburg district, for the first execution of criminal detention and for the execution of youth arrest.

The youth detention center was responsible for the execution of short, long and leisure time arrest of male and female adolescents.
