The correctional facility Augsburg-Gablingen is a prison of the Free State of Bavaria in Gablingen near Augsburg . It was opened in 2015 after a four-year construction period and serves as a replacement for Prisons I and II of the Augsburg correctional facility .

The new building has a capacity of 609 prison places and is used to carry out pre- trial detention on male prisoners from the district court districts of Aichach , Augsburg , Dillingen , Landsberg am Lech and Nördlingen from the age of 24 as well as for the execution of prison sentences of up to six months from the district court district of Augsburg .

history

In the early 1990s, the Free State decided to replace the two existing prisons in Augsburg with a modern new building. After many years of searching and difficult negotiations, a plot of land at the former Gablingen airfield was acquired in 1997 . In 2004, a winning design was then selected in an architectural competition and planning began afterwards.

The groundbreaking for the new building, which cost around 105 million euros, took place in April 2011. After four years of construction, the Bavarian Justice Minister Winfried Bausback finally opened the Augsburg-Gablingen correctional facility on October 26, 2015. The first prisoners were transferred to the new institution on November 10, 2015.
