The prison Nuremberg , with a total of 1,153 inmates, the second largest prison of the Free State of Bavaria after the prison Munich . The building complex was built in several construction phases: From 1865 to 1868 the Nuremberg cell prison was built, from which the men's asylum later emerged. The women's institution was established between 1886 and 1888. The remand prison was built from 1889 to 1901.

Between 1945 and 1949 the Nuremberg Trials took place in the Palace of Justice . In 1945 the cell prison was requisitioned . In 1945 and 1946 the defendants of the Nuremberg trial against the main war criminals , including Hermann Göring , were housed in a wing of the cell prison.

In 1952 the Nuremberg cell prison was handed over to the German authorities. From 1970 extensions and new buildings followed. In 1972 the remand prison was expanded to include another building. In 1980 a supply center with a kitchen, a laundry and a heating center was built, and from 1986 to 1998 a new accommodation building in E-shape (houses A – E). In 1990 the factory building with modern workshops was built. In 1998 the central building with a multi-purpose hall and gym was inaugurated.

The former penal institution at the Holzweiher east of the Zerzabelshof was in operation until the 1970s . Here the prisoners worked in the agricultural environment during the day.

The remand prison has a total of 421 prison places, which are divided into solitary confinement rooms and communal places. The transport department and the sick department are also located in the prison building.

The penal detention department for men (which is why it is still called the men's institution in Nuremberg) has 525 detention places. The entire building complex is structurally divided into 5 detention buildings in which there are also group and leisure rooms.

The women's institution offers a total of 63 prison places.

The youth detention center is structurally and logistically separated in a part of the women's institution. There are 45 detention places for young people.

The Lichtenau branch is referred to as “prison light” , as the open prison department is located there. It has 99 detention places in which mostly first-time convicts are admitted and substitute custodial sentences are carried out and is approx. 38 km from Nuremberg near Ansbach .

Jurisdiction

The Nuremberg correctional facility is factually and locally responsible for men in a closed prison with custodial sentences of up to 6 months in the first prison for the judicial districts of Nuremberg , Fürth , Erlangen and in the regular prison for the districts of Nuremberg, Fürth, Erlangen, Hersbruck , Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz , Neustadt the Aisch up to 2 years.

When it comes to pre- trial detention , the Nuremberg penal institution is responsible for the district court districts of Nuremberg , Fürth , Erlangen , Hersbruck , Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz , Neustadt an der Aisch and Schwabach .

The women's asylum of the Nuremberg prison is responsible for prison sentences of up to 9 months in the first and standard execution for the judicial districts of Deggendorf , Passau , Amberg , Ansbach , Nuremberg , Fürth , Regensburg , Weiden in the Upper Palatinate . Pre-trial detention of women is only carried out for the judicial districts of Nuremberg, Fürth and Ansbach.

Activities of the inmates

Prisoners as well as juvenile and adolescent prisoners on remand are obliged to work. There are possibilities jobs, divided into 13 separate hospital establishments: a painting company, a mason operation, an electric mode, a bookbinding / print shop , a laundry , an auto repair shop, a shoemaker , work therapy, installation, a locksmith , a carpenter , a tailor and a nursery .

There are also various educational opportunities. Participation in short courses such as the “ European Computer Pass”, “Qualification to become a wood machine operator” and “Training to become a forklift driver ” serve to increase the chances of reintegration. It is also possible for the prisoners to acquire their qualifying secondary school diploma through a so-called “qualification course” . Other courses that are offered as required include: a. German for foreigners, literacy and an arithmetic course. Vocational training in the respective craft establishment is also given, but rarely feasible due to short penalties.

Leisure time activities also play an important role in reintegration. Different sports such as B. volleyball , basketball , table tennis and the like. a. offered, occasionally also weight training . Numerous literature is available in the institution library , also in different languages. The rental of board games is used by numerous prisoners. Concerts and theater performances also take place several times a year.
