Huldreich Gustav Sulzberger (born January 3, 1819 in Gachnang in Thurgau , † October 7, 1888 in Felben TG , today the municipality of Felben-Wellhausen ) was a Swiss Reformed pastor and historian.

life and work

Huldreich Sulzberger's parents were Johann Ludwig Sulzberger (1778–1830), pastor of Gachnang , and Elisabetha Merkle von Ermatingen ; the liberal government councilor Johann Ludwig Sulzberger was his older brother. After attending the Latin school in Frauenfeld and the grammar school in Zurich , he studied theology in Zurich and Bonn . From 1843 on he was vicar in Frauenfeld, Dießenhofen and Matzingen . In 1845 he was elected pastor of the parish of Sitterdorf ; This was followed by jobs as pastor in Sevelen SG from 1866 to 1882 and in Felben from 1882 until his death in 1888.

During his time in Sitterdorf, Sulzberger developed a historical interest, encouraged by the important Thurgau historian Johann Adam Pupikofer , who was dean in neighboring Bischofszell at the time. Sulzberger contributed a supplementary part ( History of the Thurgau from 1798-1830 ) to the second edition of Pupikofer's history of Thurgau ( history of the Landgraviate of Thurgau from the transition to the Confederation to the liberation in 1798. Frauenfeld 1889) . In 1859 he was a co-founder of the Thurgau historical association. His main field of work was church history. He did pioneering work in researching the Reformation and the Counter-Reformation in Thurgau. His account was given high recognition because he wrote it without denominational polemics, albeit from the standpoint of a Reformed clergyman.

Sulzberger was married to Maria Susanna Altwegg from Happerswil . He left three children and a number of unpublished manuscripts.
