Johann Adam Pupikofer (born March 17, 1797 in Untertuttwil near Wängi ; † July 28, 1882 in Frauenfeld ) was a Swiss historian and Reformed clergyman .

biography

Johann Adam Pupikofer was a pastor in Güttingen from 1818 to 1821 and as a deacon in Bischofszell from 1821 to 1861 ; from 1846 to 1862 he also worked as dean . He then worked from 1862 to 1880 in Frauenfeld as a Thurgau state archivist and canton librarian .

Pupikofer was a founding member in 1821 and later several times president of the "Society for the Promotion of the Good and the Charitable in the Canton of Thurgau". In 1859/1860 he was the founding president of the “ Historical Association of the Canton of Thurgau ” and editor of Thurgau's contributions to patriotic history . He became known with his history of the Thurgau (first edition in two volumes 1828–1830). In addition, he wrote a wealth of writings on the history of the Thurgau and the Lake Constance area. From 1872 to 1874 he represented Switzerland on the board of the “ Association for the History of Lake Constance and its Surroundings ”.

Politically, Pupikofer was liberal. Initially, together with Thomas Bornhauser, he called for the renewal of the Thurgau, but unlike the latter, after 1830, he tended towards the liberal conservatives. From 1845 to 1855 he was a member of the Grand Council (cantonal parliament) and also from 1850 to 1852 and from 1855 to 1858 as a member of the Education Council (cantonal authority responsible for education).

Pupikofer was one of the closest friends of the bibliophile Joseph von Laßberg . In 1872 he received an honorary doctorate from the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Zurich .
