The Humboldt River (Eng. " Humboldt River ", named after the naturalist Alexander von Humboldt ) is a 483 km long river in the US state of Nevada . The Humboldt River is formed from an eastern and northern inlet at Elko County in northeast Nevada. The main tributaries come from the Ruby Mountains , Jarbidge Mountains , Independence Mountains, and the eastern Humboldt Mountains . It runs west on the northern edge of the desert of the Great Basin . The river eventually pours into the shallow basin of the Humboldt Sink . These lakes have no drainage. The water evaporates under the climatic conditions of the desert region. For much of his run he is accompanied by the rails of the Central Pacific Railroad and Interstate Highway 80 .

Larger towns are Elko , Winnemucca and Eureka .

The Humboldt River was first in 1828 by the British fur traders Skene Peter Ogden described, in 1834 drew Benjamin Bonneville on an expedition along the river and in 1841 took advantage of John Bidwell to Humboldt as part of the way when he first major Siedlerzug on the newly established California Trail by California led.
