Location of the Hutier barracks in Hesse |
The Hutier barracks is a former barracks in the Lamboy district of the city of Hanau .
history
The Hutier barracks were built between 1911 and 1913 as the third barracks in Lamboy after the Francois and Hessen-Homburg barracks . In contrast to the previously built barracks, the Lord Mayor of Hanau, Eugen Gebeschus , decided not to put the building of the barracks out to tender, but to award the contract to Hanau companies in order to generate trade tax income. By using concrete instead of sandstone as a building material, the complex was architecturally simpler than the barracks previously built. The facility consisted of several buildings grouped around a parade ground in the middle .
After completion, the Prussian II Railway Regiment moved into the barracks. After the First World War , the regiment was disbanded and the buildings were used by the state police . In 1937 the Wehrmacht moved into the barracks and stationed the 1st Battalion of Infantry Regiment No. 88 there. At the same time, the barracks received its current name, after the German General Oskar von Hutier .
The barracks was badly damaged in 1945 during the Second World War . After the end of the war, the American occupation forces initially used the facility as a warehouse for displaced persons . In the years 1951 to 1953 the US Army rebuilt the barracks, expanded the area considerably and stationed troops and tanks there . The US Army used the barracks until 2007.
conversion
After the US Army withdrew from the barracks in 2007, the city of Hanau decided to relocate the volunteer fire brigade from the old location west of the city center to the former tank hall. Since then, a new building has housed the Hanau Hazard Defense Center. The area in the north is intended as an expansion area for Ikea , while a car dealership and a garden center are located in the south.
The further use of the site failed due to a lack of interest, so that the historical buildings in particular stood empty for a long time and fell into disrepair. The situation only improved in 2012 and companies settled there. The former parade ground was named Sophie-Scholl-Platz , which was heavily criticized because its name was simply unsuitable for a former barracks. Due to the continued rather subdued demand, there are now plans to build apartments in Hutier, contrary to the original plan.
Monument protection
The Hutier barracks is a cultural monument according to the Hessian Monument Protection Act .
