Hwang Yau-tai ( Chinese  黃友棣  /  黄友棣 , Pinyin Huáng Yǒudì ; born January 12, 1912 in Gaoyao , Guangdong ; † July 4, 2010 in Kaohsiung ) was a Chinese composer , pianist , violinist and music teacher .

Life

Hwang learned several Chinese instruments. From 1930 to 1934 he studied education at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangdong. From 1934 to 1939 he studied piano with Alice Lee in Guangzhou and violin with Tonoff in Hong Kong. In 1936 he studied violin at Trinity College of Music and until 1955 at the Royal College of Music in London. During the Second World War he devoted himself to new music and composed several nationally known vocal music . He taught at Sun Yat-sen State University and later became a professor there . He also conducted research on classical Chinese music and published numerous musicological articles. After the Chinese Civil War , he moved to Hong Kong and initially worked as a high school teacher. In 1952 he was invited to Taipei for concerts and worked with writers and composers who were critical of the regime. In 1956 he taught in Thailand . From 1957 to 1963 he studied composition with Alfredo De Ninno and Franco Margola at the Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia and counterpoint with Edgardo Carducci at the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music in Rome. After returning to Hong Kong, he taught at Zhuhai College until his retirement in 1987. Hui Cheung-wai is one of his disciples . In 1971 the BBC broadcast his works. Since 1987 he lived in Kaohsiung and composed for the Ministry of Defense and Buddhist groups. He created more than 180 compositions. In 2001 he became an honorary member of the Hong Kong Composers' Guild . The Taiwanese Presidents Chiang Kai-shek and Lee Teng-hui honored him for his commitment to Chinese culture .
