Hyobanche is a plant genus in the family of Broomrape family (Orobanchaceae). The eight species since 2018 are distributed in southern Africa.

Description and ecology

Hyobanche species are holoparasitic plants . The plant itself spreads in the form of subterranean rhizomes , of the plant itself you can usually only see the inflorescence. Due to the length of the rhizomes, this can be a considerable distance from the actual host.

Occurrence

The areas are located in southern Africa . Hyobanche - species colonize a variety of habitats, by the coast sand dunes to the deserts of the Karoo and the semi-deserts of Namaqualand to the mountainous regions of the Drakensberge and to the grasslands of Lesotho rich.

Systematics

The genus Hyobanche was in 1771 by Carl von Linné in Carl von Linné, L. Salvius, J. Banks: Mantissa plantarum altera. Salvius , Stockholm, p. 444.

There have been eight Hyobanche species since 2018 :

  • Hyobanche atropurpurea Bolus : It occurs in the South African provinces of the North and Western Cape .
  • Hyobanche barklyi N.E.Br. : It occurs in Namibia and in the South African province of North Cape .
  • Hyobanche fulleri E. Phillips : This endemic only thrives on the coast from Durban to Port Shepstone in KwaZulu-Natal . The stocks are continuously decreasing.
  • Hyobanche hanekomii A.Wolfe : It was first described in 2018. This endemic only thrives in the Cape Fold Mountains from Citrusdal to near Van Rhynsdorp in the Western Cape.
  • Hyobanche robusta Schönland : This endemic only thrives on the coast from Oyster Bay to Kenton On Sea in the Eastern Cape . Only five sites are known and the populations are endangered by invasive plant species.
  • Hyobanche rubra N.E.Br. (Syn .: Hyobanche calvescens Gand. , Hyobanche glabrata Hiern ): It isrelatively widespreadin Lesotho and in the South African provinces of the Western, Northern and Eastern Cape.
  • Hyobanche sanguinea L. (Syn .: Hyobanche coccinea L. ex Steud. ): It has the most widespread distribution within the genus in Lesotho, Swaziland and in the South African provinces of Eastern, Northern, Western Cape and Free State .
  • Hyobanche thinophila A. Wolfe : It was first described in 2013. It only thrives on the coast from Cape Agulhas to the Atlantic coast in the Western Cape.
