Hyōka ( Japanese 氷 菓 , literally "frozen treat", indirectly "ice cream") is a mystery novel by Honobu Yonezawa . It is the first volume of the Koten-bu Series ( < 古典 部 > シ リ ー ズ , "Koten-bu" Shirīzu , German "'Classic Literature Club Series"). Five volumes were published between 2001 and 2010.

From November 2011 to November 2012, 770,000 copies were sold, making it 3rd in the best-selling light novel series of the year. By November 2013, 160,000 more had been added, which put it in 29th place.

action

At the request of his older sister, the student Hōtarō Oreki joins the Classical Literature Club of the Kamiyama High School so that it is not dissolved. He is followed by Eru Chitanda, Satoshi Fukube and Mayaka Ibara as further members.

The action takes place in the fictional city of Kamiyama in Gifu Prefecture , a place that is based on the actual hometown of the author, who also bears the name Takayama and is also located in Gifu Prefecture. The real Hida high school serves as a model for the fictional Kamiyama high school.

Hōtarō Oreki ( 折 木 奉 太郎 , Oreki Hōtarō )
An average dynamic boy who joins the Classical Literature Club at the request of his sister so that it is not dissolved. Although he avoids anything that requires effort, he is able to think about something until he sees through it and produces brilliant results. He seems to be attracted to Chitanda without realizing it.
Eru Chitanda ( 千 反 田 え る , Chitanda Eru )
A strange girl who is also a member of the Classical Literature Club. She is polite and nice, but at the same time she is also goofy and lively. Eru Chitanda comes from a rich farming family. Whenever you come to her with a puzzle, she doesn't stop thinking about it until it is solved.
Satoshi Fukube ( 福 部 里 志 , Fukube Satoshi )
He is a classmate of Hōtarō, who enters the Classical Literature Club with him. He has a very good memory, which he calls a "database," and can often be seen smiling. As the funniest main character of them all, he calls Mayaka by her first name.
Mayaka Ibara ( 伊 原 摩耶 花 , Ibara Mayaka )
As the fourth member of the Classical Literature Club, Makaya was the last to enter. She finds Hōtaro strange and becomes a good friend of Erus. She also has romantic feelings towards Satoshi, but always treats him in a lighthearted manner and calls him Fuku-chan.


Adaptations

Manga

A Manga adaptation drawn by Taskohna was published on January 26, 2012 by Kadokawa Shoten's magazine Shōnen Ace and ended with twelve edited volumes. It has been published in German by Tokyopop since November 2013 , in eleven volumes so far.

Anime

The first four volumes of the "Koten-bu" series were adapted as a 22-part anime series by the Kyōto Animation studio under the direction of Yasuhiro Takemoto . The first episode premiered on April 14, 2012 at its own event at the Kadokawa Cinema in Shinjuku .

The actual broadcast took place from April 23 to September 17, 2012 at midnight (and thus on the previous television day ) on Chiba TV . A little later that same night, TV Saitama and TVQ Kyūshū followed, as well as TV Kanagawa , KBS Kyōto , Sun TV , Gifu Hōsō , Tokyo MX , Mie TV and nationwide via satellite BS11, with an offset of up to a week .

An OVA episode based on the author's plot was released on January 13, 2013 along with the third part of the manga.

The first opening title, Yasashisa no Riyū ( 優 し さ の 理由 ), was composed by Makoto Miyazaki and sung by the band ChouCho . The text is from Saori Kodama . The corresponding final title, Madoromi no Yakusoku ( ま ど ろ み の 約束 ), was composed by Kensuke Okamoto and sung with the text written by Saori Kodama by Satomi Satō and Ai Kayano , the seiyū by Eru Chitanda and Makaya Ibara.

The second opening credits, titled Mikansei Stride ( 未 完成 ス ト ラ イ ド , Mikansei Sutoraido ) was composed by Masato Nakayama and interpreted by Saori Kodama. The second credits under the title Kimi ni Matsuwaru Mystery ( 君 に ま つ わ る ミ ス テ リ ー , ~ Misuterī ), as in the first credits, was sung by Satomi Satō and Ai Kayano.
