Işılay Saygın

Işılay Saygın (born April 4, 1947 in Buca ; † July 27, 2019 in Izmir ) was a Turkish architect and politician .

Life

İşilay Saygın was born in 1947 as the daughter of Osman Nuri Saygın and his wife Fatma in Buca in the province of Izmir . She studied architecture at Ege Üniversitesi .

Saygın joined the Adalet Partisi (AP) in 1973 and became mayor of her hometown that same year. Her office ended with the military coup in Turkey in 1980 . She then worked as an architect.

In 1983 she returned to politics and became a member of the Milliyetçi Demokrasi Partisi (MDP). In the parliamentary elections in 1983 , she moved to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey for the province of Izmir as a member. In the following elections in 1987 , 1991 , 1995 and 1999 she was able to defend her seat. After the MDP was dissolved in 1986, it became a member of the Anavatan Partisi (ANAP) the following year . In 1995 she moved to Doğru Yol Partisi (DYP), but returned to ANAP two years later. She remained politically active until 2003.

Saygın served briefly in October 1995 as Minister of State for Women and Family in the government of Prime Minister Tansu Çiller in the 51st government of Turkey and again until 23 February 1996 in the 52nd government in the same office. On the same day, she was appointed Minister of the Environment. On March 6, 1996, she appointed Prime Minister Mesut Yılmaz in the 53rd government as Minister of Tourism. She remained in office until June 28, 1996, when she was again minister of state in the 54th government under Necmettin Erbakan and also in the 55th government under Mesut Yılmaz until January 11, 1999.

Controversy

In January 1998, Saygın was criticized as Minister of State for Women and Family when she defended the virginity tests in an interview. Women's rights activists demanded their release.
