history
In 1898, the Cassa Nazionale per le Assicurazioni Sociali (CNAS), the German National Social Insurance Fund, was founded. At that time, only workers could voluntarily insure themselves against occupational disability and old age, with employers and the state also making a contribution. Both insurances became compulsory in 1919 . In 1933 the name was changed to Istituto Nazionale Fascista per la Previdenza Sociale and the social insurance was gradually expanded. In 1943 the name “ Fascista ” was dropped , but the expansion of the institute continued in the decades that followed. In the 1990s, there were far-reaching organizational reforms, with a number of smaller and specialized social insurance providers being taken over by the INPS. In addition, relatively generous retirement and social benefits were gradually reduced. Due to the demographic and economic development of Italy, the pay-as-you-go system leads to deficits in social security, which have to be compensated by subsidies from tax revenues.
