IO Tillett Wright

iO Tillett Wright (born September 2, 1985 in Lower East Side , Manhattan , New York City , New York ) is an American author , photographer , television presenter and activist .

Childhood and youth

iO Tillett Wright was born on September 2, 1985 in Lower East Side , Manhattan ( New York City ). His mother, Rebecca Wright, is a photographer . He was born a girl but lived as a boy for eight years during his childhood.

Career

He had his first public appearance in the film In Last Consequence (1997), where he played a boy named "Walter". He later appeared in supporting roles in several episodes of Sex and the City .

As of 2010, Wright wrote numerous columns for the New York Times Style Magazine (T Magazine). He also worked on the “Self Evident Truths” project, in which he photographed Americans who do not define themselves as 100 percent heterosexual . To date, over 9,500 people have given the project their face.

In 2012 he had an appearance at the TED talk TEDxWomen in Washington, DC Under the title "Fifty Shades of Gay" he spoke about the topics of sexuality and gender as spectra. The video has been viewed over 2.6 million times to date. He is now a frequent guest speaker at universities.

In 2016, Wright co-hosted the MTV show Suspect with Nev Schulman . His first book, Darling Days, A Memoir , was published on September 27, 2016 by Ecco Books, an imprint of HarperCollins . The German edition will be published by Suhrkamp Verlag in September 2017 .

Personal

Wright described herself in a 2014 article as “a woman who has masculine qualities and many feminine qualities,” and there would be nothing wrong with that. With the publication of his memoirs in 2016, Wright clearly declared himself a trans man who also claims male pronouns .

In the same year he sided with Amber Heard , with whom he is friends, when these abuse allegations against her longtime partner Johnny Depp raised. The case caused controversy among the public. Wright now lives in Los Angeles .
