Ipredator is a VPN - anonymizer service , the first time in 2009 by The Pirate Bay was offered in order to protect the privacy incognito to move on the internet.

The offer was made available in response to the announced implementation of Directive 2004/48 / EC (Protection of Intellectual Property Rights) (IPRED) in Sweden on April 1, 2009, which allows rights holders to access personal information in the event of suspected violations of the Copyright allowed. The name of the service IPREDator was intended as an allusion to this policy.

IPredator became known through its connection to The Pirate Bay and the blocking by the online payment services Payson , PayPal and Paysafecard in 2013.

development

In March 2009 Peter Sunde informed the TorrentFreak magazine that the service is currently in the beta phase and will later be tested with around 500 users. On June 15, 2009, The Pirate Bay announced that it had reached 180,000 registrations and sent invitations to the first 3000 users. Finally, in January 2010, IPredator was opened to the general public.

Although the service was originally directed against the IPRED law, the operators also put the fight against the controversial Försvarets radioanstalt law (FRA) of June 18, 2008 in Sweden on the agenda. Since then, the special unit of the military secret service MUST has been able to monitor all communications between Swedish citizens and foreign countries regardless of suspicion. Based on the computer game Punch-Out !! a graphic with the title FRA vs IPredator - It's on! released.

Payment blocks

In July 2013, the Swedish payment service Payson informed its affected customers that they would discontinue credit card payments to IPredator . The international provider PayPal unceremoniously froze the Ipredator account. The reason for this are new guidelines from VISA and Mastercard to no longer support VPN operators in the future - as was previously the case with file sharing offers. Despite ongoing payment blocks, neither VISA nor Mastercard had given an official confirmation. TorrentFreak suspected the action was being influenced by the authorities, which, however, happened at completely inopportune time in the course of the PRISM scandal.

In August 2013, PaysafeCard stopped payments to IPredator on the grounds that it could not be traced if a customer behaved illegally. On August 26, 2013, on the blog of ipredator announced that PayPal has canceled after the clarification of "misunderstandings" the account lockout and that PaysafeCard Although ipredator has locked, but proxy services as JonDo , as well as other Sharehoster deprecated.

After the disputes with credit card operators and online payment services, as of September 2013 , IPredator now accepts payments via: Bitcoin , PayPal (without credit cards), Payson (without credit cards), OK Pay (without credit cards), and Payza (with credit cards).
