100 Steps is an Italian feature film made in 2000 by the director Marco Tullio Giordana .

content

The film depicts the life of the Italian politician and anti-mafia fighter Giuseppe "Peppino" Impastato .

Impastato was the son of a mafioso in Cinisi. Even as a teenager he rebelled against his father and the machinations of the Mafia . He joined the communists and supported resistance to the expropriation of the peasants when another runway was planned for Palermo airport. He organized cultural events and started a radio station. About this he reported on the crimes of the Mafia and publicly mocked "Don Tano" ( Gaetano Badalamenti ), a leading mafia boss. With that his death sentence was passed. When Impastato ran in the Sicilian local elections in 1978, he was murdered by the mafia during the election campaign.

background

The film title refers to the 100 or so steps that lay between Impastato's parents' home and the home of the local mafia boss.

Impastato's death was initially dismissed as a suicide and the investigation was closed. The film contributed to the fact that the case became internationally known and that the trial against the perpetrators, which had been resumed for years, was shortened.

Reviews

“Oppressive political thriller, which, with its staged simplicity, paints the picture of an enthusiastic person who talked his way through his firm belief in justice to the head and neck. A committed film with an energetic main actor who reflects both the protagonist's attitude and the attitude towards life of the time with documentary accuracy. "
