Ian Berry always sees his work as a photographer in a humanistic and socially critical context, which should only serve as a detailed, documentary reporting . Like Magnum founder Robert Capa or photographer colleague James Nachtwey (also a Magnum member), Berry faces the picture frontally and directly. Always keeping the emotions of those affected in the viewfinder, the photographer also tries to keep the distance to the photographed event. For example, his photo documents about the riots in Northern Ireland at the beginning of the 1970s ostensibly show the horror or suffering on the faces of those involved. Berry photographs his works mostly in black and white , which is why these pictures live primarily from their dynamism and expressiveness and are a committed plea for political and social humanism by Berry. Bob Dylan used one of Berry's photographs for the cover of Rough and Rowdy Ways (2020).
