Ian Redmond

Ian Michael Redmond , OBE , FZS , FLS (born March 11, 1954 in Malaysia ) is a British biologist , conservationist and non-fiction author .

Life

Redmond was born in Malaysia. When he was five years old, his mother moved him to Beverley . He studied biology and psychology at Keele University .

Redmond was involved in over 50 documentaries for broadcasters such as the BBC , National Geographic and the Discovery Channel . He has been writing non-fiction books about gorillas and elephants since the late 1980s . He describes himself as Ele-Friend , a suitcase word made up of elephant and friend (in German friend). He is known for his work in Mount Elgon National Park , where he filmed the elephants while they were taking minerals in the mountains of Mount Elgon .

Redmond is married and has twin sons. He has two brothers. In 2006 he was awarded the Officer's Cross of the Order of the British Empire . In 2011, Redmond received an honorary degree from Oxford Brookes University for his conservation work .

In 2016 he was attacked by the lead cow of a herd of elephants and suffered permanent injuries.
