Ian Wilson (composer)

Ian Wilson (born December 26, 1964 in Belfast ) is a British classical music composer from Northern Ireland .

Wilson earned a PhD in composition from the University of Ulster , which commissioned his orchestral work Rise in Celebration in 1993 to celebrate its tenth anniversary. He wrote u. a. two operas, works for organ, cello, alto saxophone, violin, marimba and piano, orchestral pieces, eight string quartets and various works for chamber music , voice and multimedia . His compositions were u. a. Performed by the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, the Ulster Philharmonic, Belgrade Philharmonic and the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, the London Mozart Players , the Irish Chamber Orchestra and Hugh Tinney .

At the Ultima Festival in Oslo, Wilson received the composition prize for Running, Thinking, Finding for Orchestra in 1991; In 1992 he received the Macaulay Fellowship of the Arts Council of Ireland and was elected to the Irish artists' association Aosdána in 1998 . From 2000 to 2003 he was AHRB Research Fellow in Creative and Performing Arts at the University of Ulster. Wilson has been director of the Sligo New Music Festival since 2002, and from 2006 to 2009 he was the composer-in-association of California's Camerata Pacifica Ensemble. In 2009 he released the album Double Trio with Diatribe Recordings , a musical work for three jazz and three classical musicians, inspired by the language of the people and the everyday noises in Glencullen in County South Dublin . His compositions are published by Ricordi London and Universal Edition .
