Hilmar Hoffmann

Hoffmann's study full of books with a view through the large window into the adjacent forest

I would rather not is a short film by Anna Hepp . The film portrays the former German cultural politician Hilmar Hoffmann and was awarded the title “valuable” by the German film and media evaluation.

action

Hilmar Hoffmann could tell a lot from 50 years of cultural policy. But Anna Hepp didn't want to hear that in her film "I'd rather not". She was interested in Herr Hoffmann, the old widower. “Nobody is interested in a personal portrait,” he grumbles. But Hepp does not give up, Hoffmann gets involved in his very own way. The filmic essay already reveals in the title "I would rather not", which is a reference to Melville's story Bartleby the writer , the difficulties in creating the portrait that ultimately gives this film its idiosyncratic appeal.

Hoffmann's answers come from the off, in between we keep hearing the director's instructions and questions. She approaches the great cultural functionary with the confused white head from behind with the camera at head height, sometimes under the desk, sometimes she just shows his shoes on the table. A fine sense of humor is always recognizable. In between, Anna Hepp cuts pictures of trees. Here the pictures could refer to the view from Hoffmann's study into the green, where Adorno was already walking, or the metaphor of the old gnarled tree of German culture or a sign that the director is looking for her picture of Mr. Hoffmann No longer recognizes the forest for the trees.

The film was shown in the "German Competition" at the Hamburg International Short Film Festival and the Regensburg International Short Film Week . The Film- und Medienstiftung NRW sponsored the film project by promoting young talent.

criticism

In the jury's statement for the “Best Documentary” 2013 at the Blick Filmfestival des Ruhrgebiets : “Although the film succeeds in fulfilling our image and our expectations that we might associate with a documentary, it is clearly a documentary. A portrait about a public figure. Now, one may initially expect a classic constellation. Question answer. Flashbacks to the life of childhood, adolescence, career. Comments from friends, relatives, contemporary witnesses. The director refuses all of this. But her protagonist also refuses. Apparently exemplary for an entire generation of World War II, he remains trapped in his aloofness ... In depicting this refusal, in the visual confrontation with people, the director succeeds in creating a closeness to the person that couldn't be more vivid. Anna Hepp dares to break new ground and thus enriches the documentary film genre with a new, previously unseen variant. "

The FBW , however, judges “The essayistic element is underlined by the material chosen. The quality of the material and the play of sharpness reflect the attempt to create an artistic portrait beyond the pure film images. As is so often the case with essays, these elements divide the audience and thus the committee. However, the committee rubbed itself harder against the incised images of the trees, which could not be deciphered. Despite these and other unanswered questions, a majority of the committee was of the opinion that this was a cinematic portrait that stood out from the crowd of conventional portraits, whose intelligent handling of the rotated motif justified the award of a predicate in any case. ".

Awards

I would rather not receive the “Ruhr Documentary Film Prize” at the Blick Filmfestival des Ruhrgebiets 2013 and was nominated for the “A38 Production Grant” 2012 at the 29th Kassel Documentary Film Festival
