Ignaz Günther (1725–1775), the namesake of the grammar school

The Ignaz-Günther-Gymnasium is a grammar school in Rosenheim in Upper Bavaria with a humanistic, modern language and musical education.

profile

The Ignaz-Günther-Gymnasium is particularly distinguished in the linguistic and musical area.

The first foreign language is Latin, followed by English in the sixth grade. In the humanistic branch or the modern language branch, students learn ancient Greek or French from the eighth grade onwards . From the 10th grade onwards, Italian or French can be learned as a late-beginning foreign language. In addition, the IGG offers Spanish and Chinese as electives. The grammar school maintains school partnerships with schools in France, Italy, Ireland and China. There are also regular school trips to England, Greece and Rome.

In the musical branch the instruments piano, organ, all orchestral string and wind instruments as well as classical guitar and harp are taught. On request, percussion, accordion, dulcimer and zither can also be admitted. The school's concerts, especially the spring concert held annually in the Rosenheim Culture and Congress Center, are met with great interest.

The school successfully takes part in national and international competitions in the MINT area . In 2018 the school was named "Bavarian Research School of the Year".

School history

It is the oldest of the three grammar schools in Rosenheim and emerged from the former Rosenheim Latin School , the history of which can be traced back to 1571. From 1815 to 1837 today's grammar school was a Latin preparatory school, until 1855 a four-class Latin school, then a Royal Bavarian Latin School and a Progymnasium . In 1896 the school was expanded into a nine-year Royal Humanistic Gymnasium. In 1920 co-education was introduced. Before the Second World War, the school became known nationwide through the journalistic activities of the director Eduard Stemplinger (1921–1934) and his deputy Josef Hofmiller . The humanistic branch was supplemented with a modern language branch in 1961. The school was named Ignaz-Günther-Gymnasium in 1965 as part of the inauguration of an extension wing, previously it was called the Humanistic Gymnasium Rosenheim . In 1973 the musical branch was added. Former headmistress Julitta Fleischmann heads the school's friends' association. The friends' association of the Ignaz-Günther-Gymnasium had 241 members at the end of 2008.

Construction, renovation and expansion measures

When the grammar school opened on September 18, 1896, it only consisted of building number 32. However, at the end of the same year, the community college of the city of Rosenheim made the decision to build a new building at number 34. In 1900 the move was completed, the old one Building was no longer used by the school. Although there was a lack of space since the mid-1950s, the city council did not give the green light for the extension until April 12, 1961, which was completed in July 1962. Since in the 1970s the number of pupils had grown to around 1000 pupils, a further increase was necessary. The city council therefore decided in April 1974 not only to use the old school building no. 32 again, but to build additional rooms. Further conversions and extensions took place in the years 1975–1981 and 1979–1984. In the years 1997-1998 work on the roof and facade renovation was carried out. In 2009 another building with a school cafeteria was inaugurated. In 2013 the auditorium of the grammar school was renovated. In the course of this, new event technology was installed. In October 2015, a street workout park was set up on the green area of the cafeteria as part of the Q-level 2014/16 P seminar, which was inaugurated on October 30, 2015.

The Absolvia Rosenheim student association was first mentioned in 1899 at what was then the Royal Humanistic Gymnasium and existed until the time of National Socialism and the equalization of youth associations . Due to the dissolution or its continued existence in the underground during the Third Reich, the trace is lost during this time. It was re-established in 2011 by students and alumni of the IGG and the other high schools in the city and district of Rosenheim . The connection is an association of students and graduates and, like other connections, forms a network of graduates.
