Ignaz Brantner (born October 22, 1886 in Villach ; † December 24, 1960 in Vienna ) was an Austrian actor , author , operetta librettist and theater director (including Volksoper Vienna , Lehartheater Bad Ischl 1934–1941 and Landestheater Linz 1932–1953).

Life

Ignaz Brantner was born on October 22nd, 1886 in Villach ( Carinthia ). From 1904 he was an actor with a Bavarian traveling troupe and from 1913 at the court theater in Munich (today the National Theater in Munich ). In 1923 he became an opera director at the Regensburg Theater , of which he was director from 1924 to 1928. This was followed by directorships in Switzerland and at the Vienna Volksoper . In 1932 Branter was entrusted with the management of the Linz State Theater . He also knew how to come to terms with the Nazi rulers after the “ Anschluss ” in 1938 . “ His guilt seems small compared to that of countless other perpetrators. Nevertheless, his skilful slipping into the role of the National Socialist theater director, his fluent handling of the bureaucratic and heroic phrases of the new rulers, his always cheerful and relaxed willingness to integrate into the system, is fascinating and repulsive at the same time. “Despite the difficult economic conditions, especially after the outbreak of World War II , Brantner was able to run the Linz State Theater successfully both artistically and financially. In addition to operas by Richard Wagner a . a. Works by the operetta composers who were most in demand at the time, such as Paul Lincke , Richard Tauber , Fred Raymond and Ludwig Schmidseder , repositioned the theater, which was previously more provincial. Together with Schmidseder, Brantner wrote very successfully operettas himself (see list below). Brantner also succeeded in raising the necessary financial means for the theater up to the general closure of the theater in the summer of 1944, despite the hardship caused by the war. From 1934 to 1941 he was also in charge of the Bad Ischler Lehartheater with interruptions .

Brantner's contract as theater director in Linz ran until 1948, but he was dismissed by the American occupation forces in 1945. After his release, he founded the Linz Volksbühne as a private theater. After the success of the State Theater had declined after Brantner's departure, he was again appointed as Artistic Director in 1948 and headed the State Theater until 1953. Brantner was also Vice President of the Association of Austrian Theater Directors.

Brantner is considered to be the discoverer of the actor Romuald Pekny .

After the end of his second time as director in Linz, he moved to Vienna, where he died on Christmas Eve 1960. In Linz the Brantnerweg was named after him.
