Ignaz Schwarz ( Ignácz Schwartz ; born July 17, 1867 in Neutra , † December 18, 1925 in Vienna ) was an Austrian antiquarian and historian in the fields of medical history , books and the history of the Jews in Vienna .

Live and act

Ignaz Schwarz comes from a Jewish merchant family. He completed the grammar school in Neutra by 1886 and then studied twelve semesters of medicine at the University of Vienna . However, he did not complete his studies in Würzburg until 1907 with a dissertation in medical history. While still a student, he wrote historical papers on medicine and pharmacology.

At first on the side, from 1906 he worked fully in the book and art shop Gilhofer und Ranschburg in Vienna. On March 27, 1908, he received power of attorney in this company and on October 1, 1909, he became a co-owner. From 1914 to 1917 he did military service and after his return on June 1, 1917 he left Gilhofer and Ranschburg and founded his own antiquarian bookshop and auction house, which soon enjoyed an excellent reputation in German-speaking countries. He specialized primarily in antiquarian medical literature and works on the city of Vienna. After his death in 1925, this company was continued by his wife Margarete (Grete, née Horner, born September 27, 1875), who also held power of attorney since 1922. Since she was also of Jewish origin, she was deported to Minsk in November 1941 and murdered there. Schwarz's son, Kurt L. Schwarz (1909–1983), also worked in the company from 1927.

The company was named after the annexation of Austria "in 1938 arisiert " and transferred to Johann K. Paulusch (1901-1989), who had worked from 1920 to 1928 for the company. At the end of 1940 he joined forces with Hans von Bourcy and founded the company "Bourcy & Paulusch". After the war, Kurt Schwarz fought for compensation in court.
