Igor Stefan Kokoškov (born December 17, 1971 in Banatski Brestovac , Yugoslavia ) is an American - Serbian basketball coach . He is the head coach of Fenerbahçe Istanbul .

Career

Before his coaching career, Kokoškov was a promising basketball talent in Yugoslavia. However, a car accident forced him to retire from his career. Kokoškov began his coaching career in the youth of OKK Belgrade , where he quickly worked his way up to coach of the first team. He was assistant coach at KK Partizan Belgrade and assistant coach of the Yugoslav national youth team. In 1999 Kokoškov went to the United States, where he became Quin Snyder's assistant coach at the University of Missouri . He then moved to the North American professional league NBA and worked for the Los Angeles Clippers as an assistant coach. In 2004 Kokoškov also won the NBA championship as an assistant with the Detroit Pistons . After further positions with the Phoenix Suns and Cleveland Cavaliers , he was signed by the Orlando Magic in February 2015 . In July 2015, Kokoškov became assistant coach under Quin Snyder. On December 5, 2016, Kokoškov directed his first NBA game after Snyder was out due to illness. The Jazz won the game against the Los Angeles Lakers 107-101. Kokoškov was Head Coach at Phoenix Suns from 2018/19 to May 2018. He was the first head coach of an NBA team who was not born or raised in the United States. He was fired in Phoenix in April 2019 after the team won 19 games and lost 63 under his leadership. In the 2019/20 season he was an assistant coach on the Sacramento Kings staff .

At the beginning of July 2020, the top Turkish team Fenerbahçe Istanbul signed him as head coach.

National team

In 2004 and 2005 Kokoškov was the assistant coach of the Serbian national team under Željko Obradović . Between 2008 and 2015, Kokoškov was in charge of the Georgian national basketball team , with which he took part in the European basketball championship in 2011, 2013 and 2015 . In January 2016, Kokoškov became the new national coach of the Slovenian national basketball team . With him on the sidelines, the team won the 2017 European Basketball Championship when Slovenia defeated Serbia 93:85 in the final . After the European Championship, he left the Slovenian selection. In November 2019 he became the national coach of Serbia.

Personal

Kokoškov lives in the United States with his wife and two children. He also received US citizenship in 2010. The then Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili awarded Kokoškov the Georgian Medal of Honor in 2011 in honor of his achievements .
