Frank John "Ike" Mahoney (born October 25, 1901 in Omaha , Nebraska , USA , † November 21, 1961 in Boys Town , Nebraska) was an American football , baseball and basketball player .

Player career

Ike Mahoney attended high school in his hometown from 1918 to 1921 , where he worked as a baseball, football and basketball player. After graduating from high school, he joined Creighton University . Also at his college was active in all three sports. For his team he ran mainly as a quarterback . One of his teammates was the future professional footballer and player of the Green Bay Packers Paul Fitzgibbon . After completing his studies, Mahoney received a contract offer from Pittsburgh Pirates , a team from the MLB , but declined in favor of a contract with the Chicago Cardinals , a team from the National Football League .

In 1925, the Chicago team won the NFL championship with their top player Paddy Driscoll . The team had won eleven out of 14 games this season. The championship was not without controversy. The Cardinals achieved the best score at the end of the season, but lost on December 6, 1925 against the Pottsville Maroons at 17:21. The team from Chicago was still declared champions, as the Maroons were disqualified by the NFL for various rule violations.

At the same time Mahoney played basketball with the Chicago Bruins, who were coached by George Halas and were located in the American Basketball League . In 1931 Mahoney ended his athletic career and returned to Nebraska.

After the playing career

From 1933 to 1937 Mahoney held the office of district administrator in Douglas County . Before returning to public service , he was a businessman until 1946. In the last year of his life he was a postmaster in Boys Town. Ike Mahoney died of cancer and was buried in Holy Sepulcher Cemetery , Omaha.
